Bystanders Rescue Baby Trapped In Car While Parents Overdoseeditor | 08/10/2018 | 0 | Incidents
A Canton, Ohio man was driving down the road when he saw a couple passed out next to their car. When he and his fiancée pulled over to help, they found that the couple was passed out cold, and had turned purple. Worse yet, there was a baby in the back seat, alone in the car on a sweltering August day. Eric Asher and his fiancée broke into the car and rescued the infant.
“The child was covered in sweat,” said Asher, 43. “We… gave the baby some water. That was our priority.” Another bystander called 911 while Asher and his fiancée took care of the baby. Asher has since been criticized for posting images of the overdosed couple on social media, where they went viral.
“The only reason we posted that picture was to bring awareness,” he said in a Facebook post. “I have family and friends dying as everyone does daily over this epidemic. We just wanted people to be aware of what was going on in our community. We did not expect it to go viral. Lord put us in the right place at the right time.”
The child has since been placed in the care of a relative, and her parents are on bail while facing charges of child endangerment. Asher says the woman later called him to thank him for rescuing her child.
This is not the first time an incident like this has gone viral. Earlier in 2018, an Indianacouple overdosed while driving their three children, and their SUV came to a stop in the middle of a busy intersection. Thankfully, passing drivers called the police and no-one was hurt. In 2016, another Ohio couple had their overdose picture go viral. In this case, the image was posted by police, who found the couple passed out in their minivan with their four-year-old child in the back seat.
